Inking The Hero PCB: Just How Difficult Is It?

$

0

inked-hero-pcb-2

Predominately ROG engineers research performance orientated designs: Extreme Engine, OC Tools, LN2 modes, extensive BIOS tweaks etc, but aesthetics still factor highly in our fan's purchasing decisions. The black and red livery is synonymous to the brand, and ROG has always championed an aspiring design to reflect its performance leadership. This is where the idea to 'ink' the PCB came from, but getting there wasn't easy.

Perfecting the look

The 'inking' of the new Maximus VII Hero and Gene PCBs is part of a board-wide concept that reflects centers of ROG innovation, power and energy. Starting at the pin ATX power connector, the blood-red ink shoots down directly towards the Z97 PCH, where lots of ROG innovations connect: KeyBot, UEFI firmware, Intel GigE/GameFirst III, USB BIOS Flashback, ROG Connect, etc. Across the board, SupremeFX 2014's redline innovation is connected to the ink around SupremeFX audio, meanwhile, under and around the Extreme Engine III heatsink is also highlighted as a power and energy control focal point.

[caption id="attachment_32419" align="aligncenter" width="915"]inked-hero-pcb-power Different color trials around the DIGI+ Extreme Engine III hardware.[/caption]

Through the design process, there was considerable thought into how much color to add; after all, these aren't the only unique or significant parts. Ultimately too much color across the board made it look visually messy so it was abandoned in favor of a neater, sharper look.

[gallery include="32426,32418" size="large" link="file" template="file-gallery" columns="2"]

The R&D process

You'd be forgiven for thinking that just throwing on a bit of paint is quite easy, right? I mean, there's already words, letters and lines painted across the board - just change that to red and put it on a bigger area! Well, actually, it became a significant challenge. Here's a snippet of the things considered:

  • The current lettering/lines on motherboards are tiny applications, but when spread over large areas the ink must be applied extremely accurately so it does not overlap any solder points or visual que the SMT machine will need to see. This means it needs to be a thicker consistency, but not so thick that it doesn't apply perfectly evenly.
[caption id="attachment_32420" align="aligncenter" width="915"]inked-hero-pcb-3 This multi-layer trial failed on two accounts: While the application is very accurate, there are thickness inconsistencies you can see to the right, and the final red is too bright.[/caption]
  • How does the ink react to the heat of wave soldering during the manufacturing process: is it compatible with the heating/cooling rate used or does it crack or discolor?
  • PCB material matters: how well does the ink bond with the PCB? How does it expand compared to the PCB during the wave soldering? If the PCB expands or contracts at different rate to the ink - even by a tiny amount - the bond will break or there will be cracks.
  • How does a matt or glossy PCB affect the final color of applied ink?
[caption id="attachment_32424" align="aligncenter" width="915"]glossy-versus-matt Glossy versus Matt black PCBs were evaluated.[/caption]
  • Does it affect the ability of the SMT machine to see the correct right place to put components, or does it get confused?
  • How well does it age? Results were put it through an accelerated aging process to discover if it peels, cracks or discolors over the anticipated life of the board.

And finally:

  • Getting that ROG color spot on! There are hundreds of shades of red to consider, as well as the ability to apply multiple layers to affect color intensive. Each color uses a slightly different compound that affects all the variables listed above. So multiply your testing time! The ROG team tried up to triple-layer painting techniques to get the correct color and intensity.

Ultimately it's a huge undertaking to do properly, and ROG boards are yet again pushing the barriers of exclusive features and designs thanks to investment in R&D. They will be the only ones inked for some time to come!

It also features detailed settings for Reverb, Bass Boost, Equalizer, Voice Clarity, and Smart EQ to tailor audio to users’ preferences.

For the Maximus VII Formula, the audio has been further upgraded with SupremeFX Formula 2014, which utilizes cutting-edge isolation technologies to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI), premium ELNA® audio capacitors and 8-channel gold plated audio output ports provide precision-engineered audio that is on par with dedicated sound cards.

Sonic SenseAMP

The difficulty with managing a headphone amp is that few gamers know the impedance of their headphones, thus, Sonic SenseAMP does the job for you by automatically testing the impedance of the headphones and setting the amplification level accordingly. There's still manual control if you prefer, or the ability to disable it completely if your headphones or speakers has an AMP built in; all direct from the speaker config tab.

The Design Story: ROG Swift PG278Q

ROG-SWIFT-PG278Q

We asked the ROG Product Manager behind the Swift PG278Q, what went into designing the Swift PG278Q?

"Well, firstly we have to evaluate customers’ needs and wants for a premium gaming monitor. It's not the first ASUS gaming monitor – we've previously made fast gaming monitors such as the VG248QE, and 3D monitors like the VG278H, so we had some foundation R&D in 144Hz and Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D panels, but still, we have to dig deeper on every new product.

We evaluated forum, media, customer review, talked to PC gamers at events and to eSports teams for feedback. We found many wished to have a monitor that comes with a higher resolution than Full HD that was fast enough to reduce or eliminate blur, yet with good color reproduction.

ROG-SWIFT-PG278Q

Before G-Sync, gamers usually tried to solve the problem of display smoothness by turning the V-Sync, but by combining Nvidia's G-Sync with 144Hz / 1ms response technology, gamers can get minimum blur and zero screen tearing together. Asus and Nvidia have long worked together on G-Sync technology, from the original modifications to the VG248QE last year.

After showing Nvidia our customer evidence that gamers wanted greater than Full HD monitors, we have worked closely with NVIDIA to make sure the G-SYNC technology would perform well on a WQHD ROG monitor.

To push above Full HD we went to WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution at 144Hz. That LCD panel had to be specifically sourced and developed as it did not exit prior to the Swift PG278Q project. It's exclusive to ROG. Yet this was just the first step - there was still a long way to navigate all the design challenges.

The ASUS Display R&D team worked closely with the panel manufacturer and NVIDIA to and push G-Sync technology to its limits, making the Swift PG278Q the pinnacle of gaming displays, seamlessly combining these latest technologies.

ROG-SWIFT-PG278Q_BACK

On the back of our interviews and research, we also discovered a slim bezel and generally 'awesome design' were top of the list. The market has many boring monitor designs, and - often like their PCs - gamer's expressed they something that shouted 'special'. That need to 'wow’ is part of ROG's id, so this was both gratifying to know this aligned perfectly, but also added to the pressure in getting the design aesthetics right.

We used a lot of triangular shapes in the design – in geometry and structural mechanics, triangles symbolize durability and reliability, so this echoed our goal to not only make the ultimate gaming monitor, but also a durable one.

As part of the initial concept adding a signature red LED ring in the base was envisioned - symbolizing ROG's power and spirit - along with the 6mm super-thin bezel - built on our expertise in MX series - to simulate and edge-to-edge experience and give an almost seamless surround when you put three side-by-side.

Yet, to all this we still needed to add the necessary high-end monitor features like tilt, swivel, rotate and height adjustment. How do we get the LED power to the base when the distance changes as the monitor is moved around? That's is a tall order in mechanical design!

ROG-SWIFT-PG278Q_TOP

ASUS Display R&D team, NVIDIA, ROG design team work very hard to deliver gamers this signature, ultimate gaming monitor. This may seem trivial, but it requires a significant time investment to run the necessary tests and validation.

Response time and ultra-smooth gameplay are the hallmarks of a true gaming monitor, we therefore have overdrive the refresh rate and response time of the panel to the max. With virtually zero input lag at the G-Sync modules core design and with 1ms response, the Swift is about as fast as you can game on. However, it still needs to be backed by a compatible graphic card and an effective driver to complete the package, which is where Nvidia focuses an ongoing effort."

M7Impact-5

Get some Mini-ITX magic as we dive into the new Maximus VII Impact. Dig the density of its hardware, and build a PC that packs a neat mPCIe Combo card, combining M.2 PCI-E x4 that delivers up to 32Gbps throughput and a bundled 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter. Together with up to 16GB of DDR3, SupremeFX quality audio and overclocking performance like you're using a full ATX board, build small, but accept no compromise.

M7Impact-3

[gallery include="34988,35004" size="large" link="file" template="file-gallery" columns="2"]

The Impact's tiny box packs all this kit inside:

  • User Guide and driver/software disc
  • mPCIE combo IV card, with 802.11ac WiFi card pre-installed.
  • 2T2R antenna
  • SupremeFX Impact II audio card
  • Four SATA cables
  • Front panel connector extension cable
  • Impact Fan Control card
  • Black metallic rear IO shield

M7Impact-6

Oh, and the motherboard:

M7Impact-19

Your Maximus VII Impact arrives 'naked', as in, the SupremeFX audio, mPCIe Combo IV and fan control cards are provided in anti-static bags for you to plug in as you build. The VRM module is permanently affixed and sits along the top edge, provding the CPU with plenty of power. It's slim design sits outside the standard 'heatsink zone' the Intel assigns to its LGA1150 socket, so no need to worry about it hitting your CPU cooler.

[gallery include="34991,34994,34996,34995" size="large" link="file" template="file-gallery" columns="2"]

Due to space limitation the four SATA 3 ports are nestled between the PCI-E 16x slot and two DIMM slots, so try to plug them in first as you put together your build. The Z97 chipset adds essential finger space between the CPU socket and PCI-E socket to plug things in before the SupremeFX audio card gets dropped in place. Onboard power/reset buttons and ATX/EPS connectors are neatly placed along the edge for easy access and tidy cabling.

Right behind the Impact Control II card, the fan extension card is plugged in, providing (the LN2 Mode switch and) two elevated 4-pin fan headers for ease of reach as you build.

[gallery include="34992,35000" size="large" link="file" template="file-gallery" columns="2"]

Remember to use the extension cable for the front panel switches/LEDs! After feedback from mini-ITX builders, the ROG team added this little cable to the bundle as it can really help make plugging in those tiny connectors much easier.

The SupremeFX Impact II audio card slots in easily. The benefit of a separate card is to isolate the audio from electrical noise on the small PCB, which is common on mini-ITX. Combined with the EMI shield on the audio codec, it helps keeps sound quality crisp.

[gallery include="34997,34998" size="large" link="file" template="file-gallery" columns="2"]

The mPCIE combo IV card integrates the 802.11ac WiFi module into it, so it just requires screwing in the antenna cables to the rear IO as you build, then attaching the 2T2R antenna to sit on your desktop. To add an M.2 card (as shown) simply unscrew the cover and attach the SSD.

[gallery include="35001,35002" size="large" link="file" template="file-gallery" columns="2"]

The rear IO offers:

  • 4x USB 3.0
  • 4x USB 2.0
  • HDMI and DisplayPort out
  • S/PDIF out
  • PS2 keyboard/mouse
  • LANGuard Gigabit Ethernet socket
  • Impact Control II - dedub LED, Sonic SoundStage, KeyBot, Clear CMOS and ROG Connect (doubles as BIOS Flashback) buttons.

Press Release: ASUS Announces Strix R9 285 Gaming Graphics Card

$

ASUS STRIX-R9285-DC2OC-2GD5 gaming graphics card and box

Performance, totally silent operation and energy efficiency in a compact package, is now available in an ASUS Strix R9 285 gaming graphics card.  At its core is AMD's newest and most power-efficient GPU yet - the 28nm Tonga Pro, which has been optimized and re-engineered and deliver more performance at lesser wattage over its predecessor, the Tahiti Pro.  It has XDMA CrossFire technology so an external connector is no longer needed in order to push enough FPS to get the best out of Eyefinity or an Ultra HD 4K display.  TrueAudio DSP allows you to take load off the CPU, and leave audio processing tasks to the DSPs instead to enhance manageability and performance.

ASUS STRIX-R9285-DC2OC-2GD5 gaming graphics card and box

The ASUS Strix R9 285 has 1792 stream processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 2GB of ultra-fast GDDR5 video memory running across a 256-bit interface at 1375MHz (5.5GHz effective), and the core clock has been factory-overclocked to 954MHz.  Video outputs are abundant with a DVI-I, a DVI-D, an HDMI, and a DisplayPort.  The dimensions of the card are 10.6 X 5.5 X 1.6 inches (27 X 14 X 4.1 cm) and two 6-pin connectors are required to power it.

And as you would expect, this card is jam packed with exclusive ASUS technologies to further improve the overall quality, performance, and experience.  When you pick out a quality dedicated sound card, or home theater amplifier you are concerned with the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), so why should it be any different with a video card if it certainly produces undesired noise (especially noticeable in quiet conditions)?  Now you can enjoy a Blu-ray movie or do some light gaming with absolutely no background noise from the video card, thanks to 0dB fan technology.  When it is time for some hardcore gaming, the fans will automatically detect when to kick in, while still being 30% cooler and three times quieter than reference cards!

     ASUS-STRIX-R9285-DC2OC-2GD5-gaming-graphics-card

ASUS will never forget about you overclockers, power is nothing without control, so Strix R9 285 has onboard DIGI+ VRM technology, with an 8-phase Super Alloy Power design that reduces power noise by 30% and enhances energy efficiency by 15% compared to reference designs.  Voltage-modulation tolerance is also widened for stability and overclocking goodness.  On the software side, the exclusive ASUS GPU Tweak tool allows you to intuitively overclock in real-time, easily and with precision.  Even a streaming tool is included to share over the internet in real-time the way in which you dominate.
